- IGU
- Insulating glass unit. Two or more lites separated by a spacer and sealed to form a cavity. The cavity slows heat flow and reduces noise compared with a single lite.
- PVB
- Polyvinyl butyral, a flexible interlayer used in laminated glass. When the glass cracks, fragments tend to stay bonded to the interlayer.
- SGP
- A stiffer ionoplast interlayer used where laminated glass is expected to carry more load or behave more rigidly after cracking than a PVB laminate.
- Low-E
- A thin coating that reduces heat radiated through glass. Which surface carries the coating is part of the specification.
Laminated glass, step by step
Stacking, pre-pressing and autoclave bonding are separate steps. Interlayer and build-up decide how the finished glass behaves.
Which glass for which job
| Glass | Main purpose | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Toughened | Strength and small-piece breakage | Cut and drill before tempering |
| Laminated, PVB | Cracked glass tends to stay in place | Interlayer chosen per use |
| Laminated, SGP | Stiffer interlayer for structural glazing | Engineer confirms suitability |
| Insulating unit | Thermal comfort and sound control | Coating position is specified |
| Heat-soaked | Lower nickel-sulphide breakage risk | Reduces risk; never eliminates it |
