PinnSoak Heat-Soak Testing Cost for Toughened Glass
Learn what determines the PinnSoak heat-soak premium, how to compare quotes, and when heat-soaked toughened glass is worth pricing for your project.
By Shrenik Luhadia KISHANGARH|

There is no verified fixed public PinnSoak surcharge or standard per-square-foot rate. The added amount depends on the toughened glass specification, pane size and quantity, chamber processing, inspection or documentation requirements, and applicable tax or freight, so request the heat-soak premium as a separate line in a project quotation.
What the PinnSoak charge actually covers

PinnSoak heat-soaked glass is toughened glass that receives an additional chamber screening step. The purpose is to reduce the risk associated with nickel-sulphide inclusions, which can contribute to delayed breakage in some toughened panes. Heat soaking reduces risk, but it does not eliminate breakage.
The processing route normally follows this order:
- Cutting and edging the pane.
- Tempering the finished pane.
- Loading the toughened pane into a heat-soak chamber.
- Holding it in the chamber for screening.
- Unloading, inspecting and releasing the pane.
The additional charge covers an extra post-tempering process, together with the production planning and handling associated with it. The base glass, cutting, edge work, tempering, packing and delivery still need to be priced separately.
Heat soaking does not turn toughened glass into laminated glass, heat-strengthened glass or an insulating glass unit. It does not retain broken fragments, provide thermal insulation, create acoustic performance or establish the load capacity of a structural glazing system. Why there is no single PinnSoak price
A heat-soak premium can only be compared fairly after the glass build-up and production scope are fixed. Pinnaacle Glastech LLP operates on a project-based quotation model rather than publishing a general price list, and the available product information does not verify a standard PinnSoak rate.
Ask the supplier to separate these items where they apply:
| Quotation item | What can affect it | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Base toughened glass | Glass type, thickness, colour, finish and finished dimensions | What is the price of the same pane without heat soaking? |
| Heat-soak processing | Pane size, quantity, chamber loading and processing route | What is the separate premium per pane or order? |
| Size and quantity | Pane count, dimensions, nesting and production batch | Is pricing based on area, each pane, batch capacity or a combination? |
| Breakage allowance | Processing loss or replacement panes | Is any allowance included, and where is it shown? |
| Inspection or documentation | Required records, inspection scope and project documents | Which documents are included? |
| GST and freight | Tax, delivery location, packing and site logistics | Are these included or extra? |
A 10 mm pane priced per square foot is not comparable with another supplier’s quote if the offers use different sizes, quantities, edge work, delivery terms or glass build-ups.
When the added cost may be worth evaluating
The value of heat soaking depends on what delayed breakage would mean at the installation location. It is worth pricing when the pane is high, difficult to access, above people, exposed to public activity or expensive to replace. It is not automatically required for every toughened-glass order.
- If the pane is part of a high-rise façade, overhead glazing, frameless system, public building or structural glazing application, ask for a heat-soaked option and compare its premium with the consequence of delayed breakage. These are examples of heat-soaked glass applications where access, occupancy and replacement difficulty deserve review.
- If the pane is at ground level and easy to inspect or replace, the extra screening step may be less compelling, depending on the project risk assessment.
- If a broken pane would fall onto a walkway, entrance or occupied area, assess both the consequence of breakage and whether the design needs fragment retention. Heat soaking alone does not provide that retention.
- If the main concern is energy performance, solar gain or sound, price the complete insulating or laminated build-up that addresses that objective.
For a high-rise apartment balcony, floor level alone does not answer whether PinnSoak is appropriate. Consider the pane position, people below, support system, replacement access and whether the design requires laminated fragment retention.
What heat soaking does not replace
| Glass option | Main purpose | What it does not provide |
|---|---|---|
| Standard toughened glass | Higher strength than untreated glass and a small-piece breakage pattern for suitable applications | Heat-soak screening or fragment retention through an interlayer |
| Heat-soaked toughened glass | Additional screening intended to reduce risk associated with nickel-sulphide inclusions | A guarantee against breakage, fragment retention or insulation |
| PVB laminated glass | Holding cracked glass together through a PVB interlayer | The same inclusion-screening process as heat soaking |
| SGP laminated glass | A stiffer laminated build-up for demanding applications | A substitute for heat-soak screening without reviewing the design objective |
| Heat-strengthened glass | A different balance of strength and thermal-stress performance | The same product category as heat-soaked toughened glass |
Toughened glass can still break under severe mechanical impact or thermal stress. Heat soaking addresses a specific inclusion-related risk, not installation problems or every other cause of failure.
For architectural safety glass in India, identify the applicable requirements under IS 2553 (Part 1):2018. BIS lists this standard for architectural, building and general applications, with a 2024 review and an amendment shown in 2026. View the BIS standard listing.
How to compare two heat-soak quotations
Ask both suppliers to quote the same glass build-up, finished sizes, quantities, edge details, delivery location and documentation scope. The heat-soak amount should appear separately, not inside one unexplained total.
The following hypothetical format uses illustrative figures only and is not a Pinnaacle price:
| Line item | Supplier A | Supplier B |
|---|---|---|
| Base toughened glass | ₹X per sq ft | ₹Y per sq ft |
| Heat-soak processing | ₹A per sq ft or pane | ₹B per sq ft or pane |
| Cutting, edging and other processing | Included or itemised | Included or itemised |
| Breakage or replacement allowance | Stated separately | Stated separately |
| Inspection or documentation | Included or itemised | Included or itemised |
| GST | Included or extra | Included or extra |
| Freight and delivery handling | Included or extra | Included or extra |
| Total delivered price | Shown clearly | Shown clearly |
A per-square-foot figure helps with an initial comparison, but it is insufficient alone. Suppliers may use different area calculations, minimum charges or pane quantities. Small orders can be affected more by per-pane or batch charges, while larger projects may be influenced by chamber loading and production planning.
Ask how treatment will be identified in the order documents and what inspection or release records accompany the shipment. Do not assume that “heat soak,” “heat-soak test” or “PinnSoak” describes the same scope in every quotation.
Send an RFQ that can be priced accurately
Include these details in the drawing, glass schedule or RFQ:
- Application, such as façade, balcony, canopy, door, window, partition or screen.
- Project location and whether the pane is indoors, outdoors, overhead, exposed or difficult to access.
- Finished width, height, thickness and quantity for each pane type.
- Edge finish, seaming, holes, notches, cut-outs, corners and hardware locations.
- Clear, tinted, reflective, coated, patterned or other required appearance.
- Whether the requirement is standard toughened, heat-soaked toughened, laminated, SGP laminated or part of an IGU.
- Delivery location, timeline, packing requirements and site coordination constraints.
- Applicable standards, inspection requirements and dispatch documents.
These details must be settled before tempering. Toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled afterward, so a later hinge hole, notch, corner change or dimension revision may require a new pane. Compare the toughened glass specification with the latest approved drawing.
Questions to ask before approving the order
Does heat soaking eliminate spontaneous breakage?
No. It reduces the risk associated with some nickel-sulphide inclusions, but does not eliminate spontaneous breakage or every other cause of failure.
Does PinnSoak replace laminated glass?
No. PinnSoak remains toughened glass and does not retain fragments after breakage. If fragment retention is the primary requirement, specify a suitable laminated build-up.
What should a supplier include in a heat-soak quotation?
The quotation should identify the base glass, heat-soak processing, pane sizes, quantities, edge and hardware work, processing-loss allowance, inspection or documentation, GST and freight where applicable. It should also state the assumptions behind the price.
Can heat-soak testing be priced per square foot?
It can be presented that way for comparison, but the figure is meaningful only when pane sizes, quantities, processing scope and commercial terms match. Ask for the total per pane or order as well.
Is heat soaking required for every high-rise or overhead glazing project?
No. These locations are reasons to evaluate the option, not proof that it is mandatory. Consider access, occupancy, fall consequences, support conditions, the complete build-up and applicable project requirements.
How can you tell whether glass has been heat-soaked?
You cannot reliably establish treatment from appearance alone. Ask for the order description and heat-soak processing or inspection documentation, then match the records to the pane schedule and delivery.
Request a project-specific PinnSoak quotation
Send the approved drawing or glass schedule with the application, finished sizes, thicknesses, quantities, project location and required timeline. Pinnaacle Glastech LLP can prepare a project-based quotation for the relevant architectural glass processing service, including PinnSoak when it fits the specification.
